Mata Mata Turtle For Sale

£595.00

Mata Mata Turtles (Chelus fimbriata) are one of the most unique looking species of turtle on Earth!

  • Pictures taken June 2024

  • Currently for sale in our Bracknell reptile shop

  • Age: LTC, approximately 8 inches in length

  • Adult Size: Ranges from 16- 20 inches

  • Natural Habitat: Slow moving streams and marshes of South America

  • Diet: Currently feeding on defrosted fish and shrimp, but can also be offered earthworms, insects and muscles

  • Suitability: Intermediate/ Advanced

  • Handling: Display species, not suitable for handling

Enclosure requirements

Mata Mata Turtles are strictly aquatic, so do not require a dry basking area, although UV lighting should be provided. A log or similar sticking out of the water will provide easy access to the surface. They are a large turtle that require large aquariums.

The water within the aquarium should be densely decorated with wood and live plants for them to hide within, as well as pebbly gravel and sand on the floor to help them ‘walk’ along under the surface as they are not active swimmers.

Water quality is incredibly important. The water should have a low PH, should be full of tannins and should be heated to 25-27c with a water heater. Heavy external filtration is recommended, however the water should remain slow-moving and quite shallow.
